This is the second 'Peace' poster. There are about 80 words and languages expressing 'peace'. I remember that the original 'Peace Bubbles (1983)' had about 50 variations. The research was a story in-itself as there was no 'google' about and the script had to be obtained by creative methods. One of those involved visits to various national embassies where interested and thoughtful people, librarians, even ambassadors themselves, volunteered their calligraphic skills and intellectual opinions and political sentiments on the project. Sometimes quite passionate and optimistic - remember that the 80's were still very much in the throes of the 'Cold War'.

The poster, in gouache, was entered into the Moscow International Poster Competition in 1984. The theme was, of course 'Peace'.

I entered the poster, sent it off (an event in itself as posting things to the Soviet Union at that time was 'clouded' to say the least !) and heard nothing for some time. Finally, I received a letter requesting my attendance at the Soviet Embassy in London. Made my way to Kensington Palace Gardens and the imposing Embassy. Finally I was greeted by the ambassador himself (forgot his name) and was presented with a 'Special Diploma' and a letter of thanks. I was not asked to, but I offered my original artwork to the Moscow Poster Museum, which was enthusiastically accepted. Was given a 'Red Star' pin which I still have.
